A Day Out in Nice

niceDay two of our holidays and we keep up this walking theme.  But first getting around the South of France is very easy by train and apart from the bus trip from the airport this has been out plan for the week.  The train takes about 25 minutes from Golfe Juan to Nice, and the French can really do trains.  I have travelled in France by train before and have always found it great compared to the UK or Ireland.  The trains are normally on time, fast, quiet, and comfortable – I don’t know if I could ask for much more.

I have been in Nice before so I wasn’t really looking forward to it. To me it is just another big city and not one that has any great attractions.  After our day out in Nice I still feel the same way.  I am not much of a shopper, however if you are this is the city in the South of France to visit.

For me this is the best route in Nice.  Left from the train station down to the main shopping area and main street heading towards to the sea.  Take a right and follow this road all the way down till you come to the main square, you will know this by the fountains and big wheel.  After the main square bear left – this takes you into the old town area of Nice – really the only place in this rather bland city worth walking around.  To the east of the old town is a hill where a castle once stood.  It is a good walk to the top and worth it for the views and the photos you will get to take home with you.

There is an exit from the hill as the south side towards the sea, if you come down this you have the choice to walk along the promenade or turn right into the market area of the old town.

Really that is it for Nice, I am not a fan there are many much better areas to visit along this coast, even thought we still managed another 4 hours or so of walking here.  I don’t even want to put up many pictures of Nice, but I will make up for that with our visit to Monaco tomorrow and Golfe Juan.
