Aire sur l’Adour On the Way of St James

by Leslie on October 23, 2008

I recieved this email a few days back, and currently I have nowhere to list hostels in France so it will go here until I get the site reorginised.

We are two pilgrims who have walked all the way of Saint James several times and we just build a pilgrims’ home whose name is “HOSPITALET SAINT JACQUES ®” in France inside the city of Aire sur Adour.

Aire sur Adour: Is in the south west France, department of Landes.

On the way of Saint James from LE PUY to SAINT JEAN PIED DE PORT, the “via Podiensis” or GR 65. Just after Nogaro and before Arzacq.

We have make our pilgrims’ home comfortable, with inside 14 beds in 5 bedrooms, central heating, a kitchen and all the services that pilgrims need.

It is just on the way of Saint James, inside the city but in a quiet place, with a large garden.

Hospitalet Saint Jacques is reserved only for pilgrims who are walking (also those who ask to special enterprises to carry their rucksacks) and for those with donkey.

Sorry but we don’t accept persons walking with the help of a private car.

Our web site in French and in English: www.saintjacques-hospitalet.fr

I stayed in this hostel in May 2008 and can heartily recommend it. The couple who run it are former pilgrims, and go out of their way to make sure people staying there get any help they need. The night I stayed happened to be a time when a few large groups were starting their walks from Aire sur l’Adour and it had become very difficult to get onward ookings in the gites for the next few days. (French groups that are car-supported have usually made gite bookings months ahead.) Our hosts made phone calls to try and help those of us without onward bookings. It was hard to get through to some places. The next morning as I was getting up, a telephone was brought into me: my host had finally got through to a gite and was in the process of booking it for me. I can’t thank this couple enough for the sincerity of their care for pilgrims.
