Burgos to Castrojeriz

Day 14 Burgos – Castrojeriz – 38km

Today is a long day, however it can be broken in half and a stop at Hontanas is often the preferred choice.  There are two steep climbs and descents half way through the day right after each other from Rabe de las Calzadas.

It is six days to Leon the next major city, if you need anything particular e.g. contact lens cleaner get it in Burgos, the villages are fairly small and rural for the next six days.  Unlike the slog into Burgos the walk out is beautiful and calm.

Today there are two long stretches without guaranteed water.  From Rabe de las Calzadas to Hornillos a distance of 8km there are no villages and no water fountains.  From Hornillos to Homtanas, 10km, there is only San Bol after 5kms.  Carry plenty of water.

San Bol is a one building stop in the middle of nowhere.  It is not advised to stay over, to eat anything, or to drink the water.  There are no toilets and no showers.  There have been many reports of strange behaviour from the people who run it.  Avoid.

What to see:

  • Ruins of the Monastry at San Anton – stop for a drink or coffee it is great
  • Church of Nuestra Senora del Manzano – Statue of St James as a Pilgrim
  • Church of San Juan – Castrojeriz
