First Timer this June
Hi Folks,
I just found this forum and I'm very excited. I plan on walking the Camino Frances June 2010 for 4 weeks. I'm nervous and excited and looking forward to learning from you all for the next few months. I am coming from NY and spending a week in Biarritz before I head out. If there is anyone going June 1st please feel free to reach out. I've been thinking about this for almost 10 years and this is the first time I've been able to make it work out.
Thanks for all of the information already.
Regards
SP

Re: First Timer this June
SP - 28 days from St Jean to Santiago is doable but will be quite a slog, one day 15km and the next 40km! As you are going to be in Biarritz anyway, perhaps you should consider adding on a a few days to the walk instead of staying there?

Re: First Timer this June
Hi
Well, I was going to attempt El Camino this passed fall/winter, but I decided that summer would be best -- my first time from St. Jean to Santiago was in July/August '05.
I am very excited to be walking it again. Just purchased tickets this afternoon - landing in Paris June 29!
It will be one of the best experiences of your life!

We plan on hitting Burgos abt the 21st June, but you will probably be past there by then...... We are going for the first time as well, but doubt it will be the last

Re: First Timer this June
We walked from Roncesvalles in spring 2009. I recommend, good hiking shoes, not necessarily boots, ensure they fit well and are broken in. Two pairs of socks, polypro liners and woolen hikers. This will go a long way to preventing blisters. Use hiking poles, two, they take a great deal of strain off the knees and ankles. Pack for 3 days, add a warm light sweater and a waterproof jacket. Have a good hat. Keep your weight down, should be less than 20 lbs including aforementioned jacket and sweater. Also T shirts are good because if your back sweats you can turn it around on breaks so as to not be putting a wet shirt against your back.
