My personal feeling is that you can't really go wrong with a hotel in SJPP -- it's just a place to sleep one last night before the grand adventure begins. I stayed at a simple, private place with rented Habitaciones and semi-private bath. It was a simple, but memorable start to the Camino. Mdm Camino (that's really her name) prepared toast in the morning, tied my scallop shell onto my pack, and requested my prayers for her upon arrival in Santiago. Her number is 05-59-37-05-83 or 05-59-37-32-90. At least 2 years ago she was still located at 15, Rue de la Citadelle. Personally, I would want to stay inside the old city walls, somewhere on Rue de la Citadelle, rather than in the newer section of SJPP with all the cars and car parks.

I then stayed at a hotel in Roncesvalles, too, before I was ready to dip my toes into albergue life. Others are ready for albergue life upon arrival at SJPP and there are several choices for that along Rue de la Citadelle.
