Default Last minute questions!! (Winter Camping)

    Dear all,

This site has truly been a blessing. All of the information gained from reading past posts, and replies has proven to be invaluable.

I will set off on 1/26/11 for what shall prove to be an amazing journey along the French Route, beginning in Le Puy and ending, with any luck, in Santiago.

Being an outdoor enthusiest, and somewhat frugal, I have decided to purchase a one man tactical tent (more of a gore-tex bivy sack with tent poles), a 4 season sleeping bag, and plenty of warm/dry gear (layers and layers).

I am planning on walking from sun-up to early afternoon, making camp off trail, and saving my shillings for those occasions when a hot shower is a must. It has been somewhat challenging finding information about winter camping along the trail, and I would very much appreciate any information that the wiser, more experience pilgrims might offer.

I am used to the cold, well equipped, young, fit, and stubborn, but not too stubborn to ask for input and advice from those wiser and more experienced than myself. Ideally, I would love to be able to pick my spots, rest, and continue with this personal journey on, more or less, personal terms. I look forward to any and all feedback, and thank everyone in advance for taking the time and effort to reply.

    Thanks sincerely,

    John

January on the Camino Frances should prove interesting, especially seeing the weather patterns Europe has had this winter. I have walked the Camino Frances five times, and the major problem is keeping cool, which is not a problem you will have.!

The official Albergues will/should be open but very few of the private Albergues will be open in Jan/Feb. Camping in the wild is not encouraged in Spain as all the land is privately owned and you should seek permission, but that is easier said than done. Most of the official Albergues will let you have a shower if you need one and will charge you €5 if you want a bed with a roof! The heating in many Albergues is a bit rudimentary, if they have any at all!

Let us know how you get on.

    Buen Camino.
