It should be allowed to camp in public lands, not in vicinity of some monument or private-owned camping. I am considering to go in the June-July this year, and still can't decide whther take a tent or not. I want to avoid overcrowded albergues...

In Spain, virtually all land is owned by someone and the rules are that you should get permission before pitching your tent unless you are on a proper camp site.

In the summer months open fires are banned to reduce the possibility of forest fires.

In reality, camping is not as easy as it might appear. The campsites are usually on the outskirts of town, away from the bars and places to eat and where the rest of your Pilgrim companions will be. The average Pilgrim aims for 10kgs on their back, but if you are having to carry a tent and cooking pots etc, that is all extra weight you have to carry for 800kms.

Most Pilgrims who turn up at St Jean to start the Camino Frances with a tent, will be looking for the Post Office in Pamplona to post their tent home!!

You normally have to pay to use the camp sites, so you may as well pay the same and stay in the Albergues with your friends and fellow Pilgrims, and enjoy the life of a Pilgrim.

I agree with Covey. I remember a fellow from England on a bike whom we met in the Meseta that had camping gear and was ready to sleep under the stars. Turned out it wasn't quite as romantic as all that. Once he figured out he was on the Camino he got his credentiale and spent nights with his new pilgrim friends in the albergues. While he wasn't that appreciative of snorers, he found the showers and companionship to be worth it. He kept his tent neatly tucked away in his bike gear and joined our Sorry Lot for several hundred kilometers.
