Hi Basil ~
The quickest way is not necessarily the cheapest. If you can find a good ticket price, though, fly into Biarritz, transfer to Bayonne's train station, and take the train from Bayonne to St Jean Pied de Port.
Buen camino ~
If you are flying from AUS, then your options are London, Paris and Madrid for the long haul bit.
From London you can catch either EasyJet or Ryanair from one of the London airports to Bairritz (France) take a 20 minute bus from Bairritz Airport to Bayonne Railway Station and catch the train from Bayonne to St Jean Pied du Port. Santiago is just over the next hill!!!
From Paris you can fly to Bairritz etc etc or catch the overnight TGV train from Paris to Bayonne and then on to SJPDP.
From Madrid you can fly/train/coach to Pamplona and then catch the Burricot minibus to St Jean. Its long and tedious, so why not start from Pamplona!!
