Default First day from St Jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalles

We are four guys in our early to mid 60s doing the first five stages in May this year. We previously walked from Saria to Santiago (2 years ago) and found it tough at times but not too strenuous carrying our own backpacks.
I admit to feeling a wee bit concerned at the prospect of the climb over the Pyrenees on our first day; we have already arranged accomodation in Roncesvalles so there will be no need for us to rush. We are all fit and will be doing some walking in preparation for the Camino.
As I am responsible for organizing the trip I would like us to take the high road over the mountains rather than the lower - easier - route. On the other hand I don't want to take on too much as we are not experienced hill-walkers. Any thoughts?

    Hi Frank ~
Congrats on your upcoming walk from SJPP. My advice for pilgrims of any age who take the Route Napoleon over the Pyrenees is a) get a weather report first at the pilgrim office to be certain there's no snow; b) start early to give yourself plenty of time; c) take plenty of food since there are no shops between Orisson and Roncesvalles; and c) take your time. It's not necessary to set a land speed record and anyone who is in reasonable shape can walk this route if they rest, eat, and hydrate. Even so, it'll be one of the toughest days you ever experience on the Camino Frances -- but there's a sense of satisfaction when you conquer it and come down into Roncesvalles to celebrate your achievement.
    Buen camino ~

It is difficult...but not overpowering. I think the thing that makes it seem harder is that it is the first day and you have yet to become hardened (like John Wayne). I am older than you and did not find it more than I could handle. Many, many, people in their 60's and 70's make it every day. Many people make it who are horribly unfit (somehow)....so prepare for a tough day and see it through.

Thanks for the helpful advice, Husky! You have confirmed my thoughts that we should "take the high road": tough though it may be, the experience and satisfaction will be rewarding. Can't wait to get started!
