Road route between St Jean and Roncesvalles

Is this much easier than the high road? Are there places, if need be, where a pilgrim could break the long first days walk?

I've taken the high road and stopped about 11km after SJPP at Orisson albergue. We stopped unintentionally as my walking companion was not feeling well. As it was, the enforced overnight stay there was serendipitous as breaking the journey up into 2 days made the whole exercise a lot easier and pleasant. Orisson albergue is well appointed and very hospitable.
