    Default First time walker

    Hi

My husband and I (from Australia ) cycled from Roncevalles to Santiago in 2007 and loved it so much we went back and cycled Sevilla to Santiago via Portugal in 2008, I can't get him to walk him so in April am walking by myself. Am a bit worried about equipment as I know what is needed to cycle but not to walk.. Everyone seems to be saying a sleeping bag is necessary but as I remember most refugios we stayed in had lots of blankets so am thinking of only taking a sleeping sheet what do you think

If you are going in April, you will need a lightweight sleeping bag as it will not be warm enough at night to just use a sleeping sheet.

My advice to anyone is to avoid using the blankets at all cost!! It is where most of the bed bugs live. With a bit of luck the blankets will be cleaner in April than they will be in Sept, but it is best not to take a chance.

Thanks for that although I notice later in the year you think its OK to go sleeping bag less, I remember Roncevalles in April 07 was pretty cold. Now I'm thinking I'll have to get a bigger pack as I have just bought a 30l one.

A 50l pack should be fine. Anything more and you will be tempted to fill up the additional space!!

A general point when buying a pack is check the weight of the pack! There is a very wide variation in weights between manufacturers for the same size pack. I have used my trusty Osprey Atmos 50L for the last five years and it is excellent.

Try to buy your pack from a specialist shop and get them to measure your back to ensure you get the right size frame. My Atmos comes in 3 frame sizes depending on your back length. Get the wrong size and you can look forward to 5 weeks of agony!!!
