Default Camino iPhone App now available in Spanish

For better or for worse there's now a Spanish-language iPhone App for the Camino de Santiago, produced by Consumer Eroski (free Spanish magazine). Here's the link: Camino for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store .

I don't intend for this to be a commercial for this app, but I have to say it's pretty impressive. It includes complete guides to the Caminos Frances, Aragones, Primitivo, Vasco, del Norte, de la Plata, Sanabres, and Finisterre (no Camino Ingles or Portuguese). Each route has a daily guide for each stage that includes a listing of albergues, monuments, an itinerary, difficulties, observations, and "What to see/What to do" along the way. The albergue listings include complete descriptions of each albergue, its equipment and infrastructure as well as nearby services. I don't know of any guide that has this quantity of material anywhere. I'm astounded by the resource that's available here -- for free.

The catch? It's only available in Spanish. However, the web-based resource Camino de Santiago, todas las etapas y albergues | CONSUMER EROSKI (which has already been described on this forum) can easily be translated into English via Google Translate at Google Translate . Just type in the URL, click "Translate" and voila.

I leave Monday for Camino Sanabres and have to confess for the first time that I'm considering taking my iPhone with me so I can access this iPhone App. Very cool.

Ahhh.......... so the Toys For Big Boys will find a space in your pack after all. I have to say I am well impressed at the technological advances to equip the Clergy. There have been various programs available on the PC to write liturgical text for a long time, so I suppose it is not surprising that life progresses for us all.

Except, of course, for those of us who don't have Mr Job's latest offerings. I make do on the Camino with a Nokia 6310i (no camera, no internet, no GPS, No 3G!) and switch it on every couple of days in the evenings to pick up any text messages from my children. I share with you the dislike of those pilgrims who need to chatter away all day on the phone. I am firmly in the grip of the lower orders who don't like Apple or its products, but as an IT Consultant, I can understand the attractions of their kit for some.

Have a good trip, and let us know how you are getting along.

May the Spirit of the Camino keep you safe.

Chuckle, chuckle. Covey, you are a peach (that's a tender, archaic compliment in the US)! Thanks for the well-wishes, mi amigo ingles.

I'm still waiting for Mr. Jobs (Uncle Steve) to create the perfect clergy app that will help us lead worship, visit the sick, bury the dead, and exorcize the demonic (Catholic version only). But a Camino App seems like great progress. Having never done the Camino Sanabres, and being unsure about the waymarking I'm facing the choice of either printing out the 33-page Consumer Eroski pdf guide or taking my iPhone. There's a good argument for staying paper free, but also a good argument for unplugging from The Modern World. Given the cost of roaming charges and an International Data Plan from AT&T (about $200) I'll probably remain unplugged even if I do haul along my iPhone.

I'll check in as available. All the best to you, my friend.

And now there's an iPhone/iPod/iPad app available in English, too. With GPS included, in fact. I can't vouch for it, but here's the link. Cost: $1.99. http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/camin...382098747?mt=8
