Ponferrada to O'Cebreiro
I am trying to figure out what transportation options there are from Ponferrada to O'Cebreiro. I want to start my walk in O'Cebreiro but I am meeting family in Ponferrada (who are not walking). So I need to travel by bus, train, or taxi from Ponferreda to O'Cebreiro. I just don't have enough vacation time to travel on foot from Ponferrada to O'Cebreiro. Anybody have any thoughts? Thanks

Re: Ponferrada to O'Cebreiro
Your transportation options are as limited as can be, I may be wrong here but the only one I know of is taxi, the train doesn't go there and I don't think a bus does either. It's about the most remote place all along the Camino! And arguably the most beautiful.

Re: Ponferrada to O'Cebreiro
There are buses (Alsa.com) from Ponferrada to Pedrafita do Cebreiro from where you can walk the approx. 4km uphill to O'Cebreiro.
You can also take a bus (Alsa - frequent 30 mins. trips) from Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo or, if you are lucky, to Ambasmestas (on the Alsa site this bus appears starting in Astorga and passes through Ponferrada). From Villafranca to O'Cebreiro is a day's walk (approx. 29 km) rather steep uphill from Las Herrerías onwards (approx. 8 km)
Enquire in Ponferrada at the Terminal de Autobuses.

Re: Ponferrada to O'Cebreiro
The Alsa bus website is also easy to use -- www.alsa.es -- to get more information. O Cebriero doesn't come up on the search terms, but if you type in Ponferrada as start and Lugo as destination you'll see your goal of Piedrafita do Cebreiro in the itinerary.
I've ridden the Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo portion of this route and it's great. If you prefer not to walk back from Pedrafita to O Cebreiro you could take the bus to Villafranca del Bierzo and then a taxi from Villafranca up to O Cebreiro, which would save you a lot of money vs. from Ponferrada.
Buen camino!

Re: Ponferrada to O'Cebreiro
O Cebreiro is remote. Did you go online to see what they have for transportation in Ponferrada? You might be able to take a bus to the closest town to O Cebreiro and leave from that town to hike to O Cebreiro. Santo Domingo del Bierzo is within a long days hike up to O Cebreiro. It's a really nice hike----a bit long---about 30kms. but beautiful especially if it's a nice day, which it was for me. I did meet a French couple who were planning to take a bus from Santo Domingo del Bierzo. In Santo Domingo, I stayed at the La Pierda albergue and it was nice and clean, and nice people, nice kitchen. Good luck!

Hi Jane --
You mean Villafranca del Bierzo I'm sure. Thanks for the tip on the La Piedra Albergue Albergue. Camino de Santiago. Villafranca del Bierzo. León. España. . It does look delightful.

Oops! Yes, Villafranca del Bierzo! And I even got that out of my journal! After awhile, walking from one town to another, I'd be writing my journal before I hit the sack---a senior moment!
