It is my dream to walk the Camino.
It is my dream to walk the Camino. When 80 year olds can skip over the Pyrenees maybe an Irish 'coleen' in her 60's could manage?

Re: It is my dream to walk the Camino.
Why dream?
Why not buy a ticket to Bairritz, catch a bus to Bayonne and the train to St Jean Pied du Port, look up at the hills and say to yourself "I can do this" and then set off on the adventure of a lifetime.
Buen Camino

Re: It is my dream to walk the Camino.
I walked the Camino with my then 75 year old Stepfather in 2009. We walked from Roncesvalles and arrived in Santiago de Compostela 33 days later. It was the most amazing trip with many friends making the sometimes difficult path so much easier. Don't just dream, but actually get out there and do it. We trained for several months before leaving making sure our equipment was right and we were up to the challenge mentally (sometimes more of a problem than the physical) as it is a long flight back to Australia.

Re: It is my dream to walk the Camino.
You can do it! I was celebrating my 60th birthday in 2009 and did it solo! Made so many wonderful friends! We stay in touch to this day! I'd like to do it again now that I'm retiring and could take more time. Buen camino!

Re: It is my dream to walk the Camino.
Of course you can-simply go to SJPP, (or Roncesvalles or some other spot), start walking and see how far you can get. You will be around other people-try it you'll like it.

Re: It is my dream to walk the Camino.
Do it, at your own pace. I started at SJPP, onto SdC then onto Fisterre and Muxia Oct 2009.
Probably try another route in 2013 ;-)
Buen Camino !!!

Hi Margaret, my partner and I will be walking The Camino in May 2012. We should get to know each other a bit and then maybe we could team up and walk with you if you'd like that. Doesn't have to be for the whole walk. But it might help to make you feel a bit better if you already know someone. Or we could just look out for you along the way.
Anyway like others say, stop dreaming and get ready for a great adventure.

Re: It is my dream to walk the Camino.
Hullo Margaret and Lia,
plan for a spring journey, before the Summer rush begins, you'll complete the journey !
Looking back , on Sept 9th, i spent the night in SJPDP, began walk to Orisson the next day, arrived in S de Compstela October 14th, 2009 and continued onto Fisterra and Muxia.
I was on the own most of the journey but graced with so many friendly walkers form all continents of the world.
Buen Camino

Re: It is my dream to walk the Camino.
Margaret you will find loads of people in Ireland who have walked the Camino already, and there are many along the way often also. For me though it is great talking with people from other places.

Re: It is my dream to walk the Camino.
Hi Margaret
I walked the Camino when I was 58 and my good friend, that I met on the Camino, was 60 as was another lady friend of hers who had just had a hip and knee replacement and we all finished. You can if you think you can. The first day is the toughest (in my opinion) and the last day was the most sad for me (because it was over). I could walk the Camino forever. It's the toughest experience you'll ever love.
Buen Camino

Larry, couldn't agree more. First day tough, exciting & nervous that you have actually taken the first steps.
Last day sad that its over - absolutely... then the thought process. What the bloody hell do I do now?
Answer - Do it again

Re: It is my dream to walk the Camino.
To quote one of my Camino friends, "It's better to live your dreams than dream your life". She walked from Munich to Santiago (roughly 2300km) and by the time I met her about 4 weeks outside of Santiago was still smiling!
You will be fine Margaret. Along the way, I met people as young as 12 and as old as the high end of 70s, saw people doing it in wheelchairs and heard of one guy doing it with 2 prosthetic legs!! Kind of puts your own pain into perspective.

Hi Margaret,
All I can say is that I walked from St Jean to Fisterra in May of this year and had a fantastic time. I love spring/early summer and this was the perfect time for me. Also, the temperatures weren't too high or low, accommodation was rarely an issue and the way wasn't too crowded (although busier than I'd been expecting).
I remember when the Camino was just a dream for me as well - something I was desperate to do but had never set the wheels in motion. Then one day I met a good friend and told her of my dream. Her advice was simple - "George, make it happen". The next day I arranged time off from work, booked my flights and the wheels were in motion (and my legs too, eventually).
So, Margaret, make it happen!

Re: It is my dream to walk the Camino.
Hi M
Mostly anyone can walk the camino -do you mean the Camino Frances? There are many caminos so I actually say, 'a' camino.
So just pack your bag and do it.
Buen camino.

Re: It is my dream to walk the Camino.
So go, I went from Somport to Finisterre this past April to celebrate my 60th year, my second Camino, lots of people in their 60s and 70s on the trail. I would not start from Somport, take liner socks, walking sticks, keep your pack light, under 9 kg incl water and go. Listen to your body and stop when it tells you to.

Re: It is my dream to walk the Camino.
Hi Dave, I walked part of the Somport route a few years back - one of the few times I got lost. And one other images sticks in my head, but I don't remember exactly where it was. I had spend all day walking up a steep hill, got lost a couple of times and eventually got to the top and there were bus loads of tourist at the top who had driven up... Didn't like them much.
And of course just like the Camino, spent the rest of the day going down again. Thinking back I think it was a choice I made to see an old monastery built into the side of a cliff.

Oh Leslie ... you bring to mind stuff that I did too, and didn't like ! As well as the aftermath !
I suspect we would have a wonderful time walking together. Like minds bouncing likes and dislikes off each other. I rather like thinking about that ! HA !
