Hi, just popped on to see if there was anything new on the forum, had a little background music going on youtube, Creedence Clearwater Revival playing Midnight Special. So I started to think about music and how sometimes a song just fits the moment. I recall a time when in Kenya working for Overseas Aid, building a community centre. We were on the second or third coarse of block work, so very little shelter and the sun was blazing down fiercely on us.
Then out of our cassette player (it was a few years back now) came Chris Rea's, a Road to hell as the eerie guitar playing blended with heat haze across the alien red dirt building site. It just felt complete and I felt, I was right where I should be, I soaked it up and I think in the back of my mind I knew that I would always remember that time, twenty years later I still recall it with fondness.
I suspect the hardened caminoist would see a ipod/mp3 player as an extravagance, or simply a waste of weight allowance, but has anyone else enjoyed a similar moment on the camino where music and the environment fitted so well together.
Please share your stories or alternatively what would your camino soundtrack be?
Nice, perhaps throw in some of Paul's solo work, good call Covey, a S&G track list is certainly not lacking in quality, some of my favourites would be ...
America The Boxer El Condor Pasa Homeward Bound I am a rock Scarborough Fair Song For The Asking Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover Me and Julio Down by the School yard Diamonds on the soles of her shoes Homeless
... they have a song for most any mood. Unfortunately the only down side for me is I'm compelled to sing and that's not a good thing, no amount of enthusiasm can replace my total lack of vocal talent.
How about a blues tune "Walking by Myself" by Jimmy Rogers & Big Walter Horton.
The first line "I'm walking by myself I hope you understand" could be substituted for:
I'm tired ...
I'm sore ...
I'm hungry ...
I'm smilin' ... all the way to Santiago!
i will go with a soundtrack that is very close to the one from the movie "garden state" (i decided to walk the camino because i very much feel like that movie's character).
the shins are perfect. maybe throw in some coldplay. just stuff to really clear your mind.
"the shins - new slang" or "coldplay - till kingdom come" i.e.
Yes I enjoyed Garden state too, but in all honesty but more because of Natalie Portman, she's just lovely and a superb actress. Actually just watched the movie "Your highness" a new comedy where she plays along side Zooey Deschanel. Another favorite actress, whom I've had a soft spot for since seeing her play Trillian in the Hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy. That would probably be a worthwhile book to carry on the camino with it's famous instructions, "DON'T PANIC" in bright red letter across the front.
Leaving my ramble behind and getting back to topic, I was looking in youtube and found a nice camino video with a lovely soundtrack. I don't speak spanish so it took a little digging around for me, but the singer is Bebe and the song is "Me Fui", it's from an her second Album called "Y".
In truth recently I have been having doubts about the my trip, started to get a little worried that I'm biting off more that I can chew. Listening to her music has gone some way to strengthen my resolve. Merely the act of discovering something new, has started to get me enthused about the trip again, It's reminded me how exciting it is to be immersed in the a foreign land, experiencing a different culture with all its new sights & sounds.
