    Hi Bernie ~
It's possible to camp with a bivi sack or a small tent, but I don't believe it's that much fun. Some things to consider: a) actual campgrounds are usually on the outskirts of towns and cities, meaning you're separated from other pilgrims and inconvenienced for things like stores and shops; b) farmers aren't that enthusiastic about people sleeping in their fields and it's not really right to camp on someone's property without asking permission; c) parks and other open spaces are sometimes the object of police attention and it's possible to be awakened in the middle of the night by an officer and asked to move along.

I do know people who've done this -- sometimes without even a tent -- and I've always felt kinda sorry for them. They spend their afternoon looking for a place to sleep. In the morning they wake up half-rested and groggy-looking and seem ruffled and dirty -- even by pilgrim standards. I would often see them in the "donativo" albergues where they can shower and get a good night's sleep at no cost.

In my opinion the walk is challenge enough. Why not be kind to yourself, the police and the local farmers and plan on spending an extra few euros per night to stay in an albergue?

Ahhh, if you like your sleep and money is no object, plan on albergues for the friendships and an occasional hotel for peace and quiet. http://www.caminodesantiago.me.uk/fo...lies/smile.png Buen camino.
