New to Forum
I have not walked the camino yet. I plan to as soon as money makes it possible. I am intriqued by the idea for spiritual reasons. Have read 2 books so far and seen the Martin Sheen movie. Would like to know more about ways to finance this pilgrimage inexpensively. Any thoughts?

Re: New to Forum
Hi TShep ~
There are a number of ways to keep costs down. With some work and research you can do it. Here are some ideas (I'm sure others will be able to share some, too:- Search for the very best airfares. From the US you'll likely find it best to fly into Madrid. If you follow the route of The Way you'll want to start at St. Jean Pied de Port, which means a transfer to there from Madrid. You'll want to compare for bus (www.alsa.es) and train fares (Renfe) to Pamplona, then plan on the new bus from Pamplona to St. Jean (it runs during during the main season only)
- Plan to stay at albergues (hostels) that are "donativo." This means you're free to donate as much (or as little) as you are able for your overnight.
- Plan to purchase your food and cook in albergue kitchens. You can eat pretty cheaply this way.
- A big expense is your gear and clothing. See if a friend or family member will loan you his/her backpack and sleeping bag (not necessarily needed in the high summer months). These are the most expensive items and if you can avoid buying them, great.
Coming from the U.S. the airfare is by far the biggest $ factor. Pilgrims often walk quite cheaply, so with care you can do make this work. Buen camino!
