Trekking poles on a plane

Hi! I flying from Charlotte to Paris on USAir. Planning to have just backpack but what about the trekking poles? They can be shortened for storing on the outside of the pack. Can they go on the plane with the pack? Anyone have any experience with this?

Most trekking poles collapsed to about 18 inches in length. In fact I can't think of any models I've seen that don't collapsed. When I traveled to and from the Camino I strapped mine to the side of my backpack, I put the tips into a pocket in the lower part of the pack and tightened them down quite a bit at the top and med section. I also wrapped the tips in small grocerystore plastic bags just to give them some added protection as far as not punching through my pack, just wanted to be on the safe side as far as that was concerned.
