Question 65, a bit overweight and doing the Sarria to Santiago de Compostela walk

    Hello!~
I am 65 year old grandma from the Pacific Northwest and I am walking the Sarria to Santiago de Compostela walk in a couple of weeks.

Have not done too much training, but can handle 10 miles with no problems (American miles).

Will buy duct tape, good advice someone. Will also walk with trekking poles and wear a light sunhat.

Have my lodging organised, also luggage transfers....but,

but I have never ever walked 20+ american miles before. Do you think I can handle it??

    Default Sarria-Santiago

Well, if you can easily handle walking 10 miles a day (16 km ) then I would say that you will meet the Camino at least somewhat better prepared than some. But I don't quite understand your last sentence. I am assuming you don't mean walking 20 miles per day. That would be a bit much for the beginning of your walk until your legs and feet were better accustomed to the rigors of walking higher mileage. Besides, it would be unnecessary as well. How much time are you allowing for your walk from Sarria to Santiago?

Default I am sure you can handle it!

Trekking poles drove me through the camino last summer! I am sure you can handle it. The terrain is not challenging.- But honestly, that part of the Camino is not the more nice one, though. A lot of people, and not the greatest nature. But if that is your plan, good luck to you! I suggest walking through la Rioja instead. All the best to you.

    Hi Anna,
you may have already started on your pilgrimage, and if you have then you'll know that the stretch starting in Sarria isn't too hard.
The Camino here passes over relatively flat terrain, there are lots of bars dotted along the way where you could sit and have a cafe con leche, or in my case a beer. At one or two of them flocks of chickens appeared and scratched around below the tables for scraps from the Pilgrims meals.

The scenery is green and lush. For the most part the Pilgrim path winds its way through lanes, almost disused minor roads, and tracks. Only occasionally does it pass alongside modern roads.
The scenery reminds me of the rural Ireland of 50 years ago. There are villages where you'll see abandoned houses. Some have collapsed into piles of rubble. Others have been boarded up and will, in time, probably suffer the same fate.
My one piece of advice to you, is don't be in a hurry. Don't try to walk long distances each day.

    Buen camino.

Absolutely you can. Keep us posted -your feet will keep you going - only your mind will let you down. So put one foot in front of the other and you will get where you are going.

    Buen camino

I am 66 yrs young and just finished the walk from Burgos, totting a backpack. I took my time, hiking poles a must, had many blisters the first week until someone in the Auberge in Mazariffe dealt with my bisters with iodine, gauze and surgical tape, no problems the rest of the walk. Loved the experience, something I will never forget. You can handle it!!!
