Default Australian travellng in Sept - needs help!!

    Hi everyone,
I am planning to walk from St Jean Pied de Port and will be doing it solo - have 6 weeks but am hoping to have some time to get to the coast and see Madrid at the end of the walk, before I fly home.
I arrive Madrid evening of 26 Aug (actually booked my flight today...very exciting!!) and am just wondering if anyone has travelled overnight to Pamplona from Madrid and can offer some advice (like, would it be safe for a single woman to do this, is bus better than train etc etc) and if not, can someone recommend a clean, safe hostel/moderately priced hotel to stay.
Also, on the Camino, is the accomodation usually single or shared rooms, or even dormitories?
Finally, any suggestions where I can get my passport in Melbourne?
    Thanks
    Maxine

    Hi Maxine!

There are no overnight trains from Madrid to Pamplona so the bus is your only option. There are frequent buses, you can see a timetable on the ALSA website.

Spain's a very safe country and you don't have to worry about travelling at night. Just take the same precautions you'd take at home.

When I go to Madrid I always book a hostel or cheap hotel on Hostels & Youth Hostels Worldwide - Online Bookings. I haven't been for a while so I can't recommend anyplace. The site has a good customer review section.

Accommodation on the Camino is nearly all dormitory.

Can't help you with the passport, but if you don't get one before you leave the hostel in Pamplona can probably issue you one.

    Buen Camino!

The bus system is good but they make stops everywhere, be patient. Make some time and look around Pamplona, if you have time.
I will be there in September as well

You can apply for a passport at any post office, it takes a couple of weeks or you can apply directly to the department of immigration if you want one in a couple of days.I would go online and download the forms and go from there. I am walking in September and will be in Pamploma around the 26th, Arriving from Sydney into Madrid on the 23rd and taking a couple of days to look at Madrid. I will be walking with my son Jonathan and Daughter Jessica.Accomodation on the Camino is a mixture of shared rooms and dormitories.I hope this helps
    Regards
    Peter

    Hi Peter
thanks for the reply but I probably should've made myself clear about the passort: no worries with the Aussie passport - have got that well & truly sorted, just figured that our pilgrimage actually starts when we leave our homes (regardless of the mode of transport) so was hopng to get my Pilgrim passport in Melbourne before I head off.
Will try at St James church in the city. Have a great walk - hope you all have a great time together.

thanks to everyone else for the notes on trains/buses - much appreciated
