Tarjeta Dorada- Train Fares Discounted 25%-40% In Spain - If You Are Old Enough & Buy the Card

I discovered the Tarjeta Dorada a few years ago when I walked the Via de la Plata and took the high speed train "Ave" from Madrid to Sevilla. Then, the "Golden Card" was much costlier than it is today but I still saved a lot on the ticket, even after buying the card first. That was an impressive train experience for me-my first high speed one!

Now, I just discovered from looking at the RENFE site that the price for the card has plummeted in the interim to just 5.05 euros. So, if you purchase it before purchasing your ticket you save 25% off the fare if you travel Monday through Friday and 40% off on Saturdays and Sundays. You can buy it at the station. That is what I did back then.

But, there is a caveat. You have to be at least 60 years old to purchase it and I am lucky enough to have gotten there!

There are a few advantages to being over 60! Living in London I get free travel on all bus services, underground and overground trains 24x7 in the London area, and on all local bus services in the UK.

Spain has been investing heavily in their high speed train network. A couple of years ago I saw the huge engineering works on the edge of Burgos where they were building the high speed rail lines through the outskirts of the city.
