Fly to either Paris or London, assuming that the long haul Aus to Europe fares are cheapest to those cities.

From London, fly on Ryanair from London Stansted to Bairritz then local bus to Bayonne Station and then the local Ter train to St Jean.

From Paris, catch the TGV train to Bayonne and then the Ter train to St Jean.

You can catch the Eurostar train from London to Paris and then the TGV to Bayonne, but the London - Paris leg is very expensive compared with the Paris to Bayonne leg.

I'm not sure if oyu have already left for your camino, but I'm in Melb & just bought a really cheap fare to Madrid ($1400 return with KOrean Airlines through Flightcentre). NOw I'm just deciding whether to walk from MAdrid, head all the way to St Jean PdP or go to Pamplona and join the French Way there.

How long would it take from the time I arrive in Biarritz to St Jean? How often do the trains to Bayonne and then the bus to St jean come? Are they easy to locate from the airport and train station?

From the airport you catch the town bus from just outside the arrival hall door to Bayonne Station. (25 minutes)

From Bayonne Station you catch the local train (Ter-SNCF) to St Jean which takes approx 1.5hrs

    TER Aquitaine - SNCF - Itin?raires TER

Put in the date you want to travel and it will (should!!)give you the days timetable.

I think there is a bus service from outside Bayonne Station, but cannot find any details on-line so presumable it is a small local bus company. The train takes 80+ minutes and I doubt the bus service is going to be any faster.

    Hi Ash ~
I know what you mean about the inconvenient train schedules. Often the last train has left by the time the various flights arrive in Biarritz. The non-train option is usually a taxi or van (like Express Bourricot) that can be expensive unless shared with other travelers. I'm with Covey in not knowing details of any bus service -- actually I've never heard of a public bus that makes that trip. It'd be a big help and if it existed I'd be a little surprised.
    Buen camino ~
