Shorts in March?
I have the choice of two walking trousers for my walk in March this year.
The first is a removeable leg trouser, which double up as shorts.
The second are some Danish Haglof walking trousers, but are one piece. These are a much more durable/hardwearing pair, and will be a lot warmer.
If experienced caminoistas could tell me of the likelihood of wearing shorts in March, this would be a great help towards me making my mind up. I dont want to take both 'just in case', due to the extra weight.
Many thanks,
Shaun

Shaun
I imagine you will want to have shorts, think of your weather at home, and look at temps on Camino, I would wear shorts all the time if I could and then long at night or if cold. In Oct we wore shorts all the time, but it was really hot. There are lots of places to buy gear, a couple we met had very little with them and found shorts in Pamplona, walking sticks in "euro/chinese" shop etc..

Re: Shorts in March?
I agree with Una. I get warm while walking and, though it's nice to have long pants in the morning I always want shorts in the afternoon. I'm sure this is true in March as well as May/June and Aug when I've walked. Personally, I have little patience for detachable leg pants because they're usually arranged such that you have to take your boots off, which is a pain. Buen camino!

Re: Shorts in March?
Well, two years ago we had 4°C in the morning and were braving snow in March. I wouldn't want to wear shorts in such weather. April was cold too. Our maximum temperatures were about 20°C, which is still a bit fresh for shorts early in the morning (15°C). Yet, some four years ago people had temparatures up in the 20s already in April.

Re: Shorts in March?
Hi Shaun,
I walked from St. Jean at the end of March and it was too cold for shorts that year (2009).
I had a pair of walking trousers with zip off bottoms but never got the chance to the chance to take them off. I was wearing wet gear for most of the time, as the weather was cold with a lot of sleet.
Hope you have better luck.
Regards,
Sean

Re: Shorts in March?
Re Shorts v Zip offs!
One can't predict the weather so I would bring shorts. If you get the "right" technical material they can weigh very little. We walked with a Spanish man, Jose, who carried very little, he started every day in his rain coat, I was in my short sleeve t-shirt, at 12 noon ? he took off the bottom part of his trousers, this was difficult on the meseta and other places where there was literally nowhere to sit down. In the evenings when he wore his 2nd pair of trousers he would remark "I am now elegant?". I prayed for cooler weather, you might pray for sunshine. At home here I would consider 15c nice and warm for shorts hehe, people need to tell us where they are from!

Re: Shorts in March?
I'm sure weather in Spain can be unpredictable, but I'm a New Englander and it is not unheard of to have warm weather one day and frigid the next.
