Default where to stay in Santiago.

I stayed at the Major Seminary behind the Cathedral of Santiago if you take the back way of the Cathedral you will see it.. it has statue of a Benedictine monk above the main entrance..or ask. It's a fabulous place with a private BR the place serves breakfast in the morning it was 25 euros a night was worth it.

I was lucky in that an Irish couple that I met on the trail got to Santiago first but as you get closer to the Cathedral you'll notice a lot of middle aged women standing on the street. They are there to rent rooms to peregrinos. Just ask how much they want. It's usually very reasonable and they have nice beds, clean sheets and hot showers.

I stayed in Calas Rei on a street with the same name. It's on the Camino on the right when you come in the old town of Santiago. The room was 60,- for a double and absolute heaven. I didn't plan to stay in a hotel but where I planned to stay I either couldn't find or was full. It was worth the money!

By the time I'm in Santiago I'm ready to rest in the lap of luxury at the Hotel Costa Vella or at the HOTEL ALTA . Both are close in to the cathedral, on quiet streets, and have some character. Rooms are about 75E to 100E, but worth it for some self care after a long camino.

I stayed in Albergue Acuario last time. It's about 2km before the cathedral. Very friendly place. Moderate hippie vibe. I really liked it there.

Stayed at Bar Tata on Rue Nova in the heart of Santiago's old town. Could not have been a better location to walk to everywhere, and for being in the center of the medieval looking streets. The owners who also reside there were so hospitable, though they speak not a word of English, and at time there seemed to be a lot of shouting between family members to try and understand the peregrinos. They run the little bar and restaurant on the ground floor. The single room was modest but clean and had a balcony full of geraniums overlooking the arcaded rue below. It is a pension, so you share the bath, bus so what. You just have to remember to close the door behind you. The atmosphere was fab and I'd go back there next time. :]

Precious I also stayed at Bar Tata!! I came here just now to recommend it but it seems you have already done that for me. It's €20 for a single room, and €20 per person for a double room... although I got the double room down to €15 per person when I stayed with a friend, pilgrim bargaining

It's about a 5 minute walk from the Cathedral, there is a supermarket just around the corner, internet cafe is also 5 minutes away, and there is a bar downstairs so you can get drunk and not have to worry about finding your way back to your room.

Hostal Suso was perfect for us and I would definitely look for it again. I think we paid 50 euro for 3 people. The room was for 2 people but they generously squeezed another bed in for us. All things are relevant but I will always remember that first shower there as the best I have ever had in my whole life. Located beside a tourist office and very close to the Cathedral. No noise problems. Bar downstairs and there was always some helpful soul down there who spoke English.

I stayed in the San Martin Pinario - Seminario Mayor (Ph: +34 981 56 02 82/ email: reservas@sanmartinpinario.eu) to book yourselves a room. It's €23 per person in single or double rooms (I'm not sure if the double rooms have one or two bed options but I think they have both!) which includes breakfast. It's a great location right by the Cathedral and therefore in the centre of the city right where you want to be. The atmosphere in the hotel is lovely and while the rooms look like (and once were) college dorm rooms, they are clean, comfortable and the bonus is in the private en suite showers!!

Four nights there didn't even rack up to €100 and it was clean, quiet, central and I had a private room - bonus after 4.5 weeks in alburgues sharing with (sometimes) hundreds of others (",)

This time I stayed in a cheap guesthouse above Café A Campana, on Rúa das Campás de San Xoán, just off Praza da Inmaculada, which is right beside the cathedral. It was a bit of an adventure given the "Fawlty Towers"-esk management style of the old lady who runs the place but given time it turned into a home away from home for me and all of my friends. Rooms are small and clean (IMHO). Singles from 15€. If you're drinking in the bar downstairs they serve you grilled peppers. Delish!!

    Hi All
Seminario Mayor-details above from Emma, who recommended to our group, can't be beaten. We spoke to others staying in pensions, small hotels and no one seemed to have the same facilities, quite atmosphere, wonderful buffet breakfast, abbey like "building", beside the cathedral, singles in a double room by themselves, own KEY! Privilege and check-in and out is like a 5 star hotel, even though you are filthy, hot and excited to be there!

I stayed at the Albergue Acuario as well. I agree that it's friendly. But.....it's wall to wall bunkbeds, cement walls with mold( you're in a basementlike room, and..........after making it all the way across the camino without a bedbug bite, I was bitten alive there. So........I wouldn't recommend it. After completing the camino, I would go with the other recommendations to treat yourself and stay closer to the cathedral in comfort!

we stayed at San Martin Pinario - booked ourselves a twin bedded room (the only place we pre-booked on the entire walk) it was lovely and fab breakfast. The rooms were quite cold as they would not put on heating until 1/11......after we walked out to Finisterre and Muxia we stayed there again before the flight home, it seemed the most apporpriate place to stay, def. worth the extra money, we decided we deserved a treat.

Totally recommend this San Martin Pinario, we stayed 1 night in the hotel version! €63 ? 1st floor I think, good quality, 2nd, 3rd, night we stayed on the 4th floor, pilgrims only, we had twins as before, ensuite as before ((more the servants version) but private!!!!!, own key, fab brekkie, all for €43 for 2..beside Cathedral and quiet as a Monastery, we were privileged to stay there. I will stay there again in May this year, if on your own they let you have a twin to yourself and own key for €23 ? imagine, and buffet breakfast.
