Friday Afternoon and Dreaming of the Camino…

Often on the Camino de Santiago I forgot or did not pay much attention to what day of the week it was.  There was no real need to.  I had stopped wearing my watch and so did not know the date either, unless I looked at the stamps on my pilgrims passport.

Now I know it is Friday, the weekend is ahead, and I look forward to relaxing, doing what I’d like and enjoying my free time.

As I write this I think of the contradiction in the previous sentence.  On the Camino Frances I did not really have free time either.  I woke in the morning and started walking – all my time was free, even though it was taken at the same time by walking.

In essence, on the Camino I was doing what I wanted to do – everyday.  However I had worked a bit and saved a bit before going to have that “free time”.  Really I had paid the price for it all before going walking along those open dusty paths that I hold dear and often miss.

I am off on holiday soon and I am looking forward to it.  A full three weeks away but this time Spain will not be near me, first Prague my other adopted home, then Croatia, then back to Prague.  Given the awful sumer that we have had so far I am looking forward to it and to the rest – to enjoy all that “free time” – but as usual I will get bored very quickly and find places to get and going walking.

Hi Peter, yes it is possible to stay in hostels, hotels and pensions along the way. You don’t have to stay in the official albergues – hostels to get the stamps on the pilgrims passport, you can just stop at them and ask them to stamp the passport.

Each time I walked I had a few nights in pensions, just to enjoy some comfort, just make sure you get the stamps.

Enjoy, it is great, and age as you will find out is no big deal on the camino.
