On the first day of the year I try to imagine where I am going this next year. I write down what I want then I see it in my head, I take a couple of hours to do this and sometimes I get quite detailed. Often though it is a just reminder of what is important in my life, usually my relationships.
On the Camino I had a small map on the back of my Pilgrims Passport it was not very detailed however it showed the main towns and the right general direction.
Having the small map reminded me of my destination. Seeing the yellow arrows kept me on the path. Occasionally I missed a marker or I got distracted, once I noticed I traced back and found a yellow arrow again.
I find my life goals easier to achieve when they are broken down into manageable chunks. A goal that is so far off from where I am is just too frightening for me. A goal that that is only for today is easier.

I agree with you – but isn’t it great to have a ‘Bucket List’! (Thgings to do before you kick the bucket… a-la the movie with Jack Nicolson). There are things in my bucket list that I will probably never do – dive with the sharks off the Carribean, leap out of an aeroplane, walk the Appalachan Trail, or run the Great Wall of China marathon. But hey, it’s great to dream, isn’t it! And some of my ‘bucket list’ dreams have come true – like walking el camino! Whooo..eee!
Hi Sil, good to here from you. Yes, bucket list is a good idea – I have not thought of mine much recently – too busy working…
Yes, making a dream into a goal and thn taking small steps…There is some actual magic (IMHO) to writing down a dream. I try not to write it down or speak carelessly about a dream unless I am genuinely ready to make a committment to making it happen. Somehow when I make that mental committment, the steps unfold, the money arrives and the opportunities fall into place. It is like the moment when, in an awe inspired moment of discvery, you say “I love you” to another human being…the magic begins and the wheels are in motion…I speak from my own crazy experience where many wonderful, unexpected paths have allowed me to try out many of my dreams.
Life is good….
