Surfing was once regarded as the preserve of Polynesian Kings, surfing has become a symbolic sub-culture that has spread worldwide, with Ireland fast developing a vibrant surfing culture of its own.

The relentless action of the mighty Atlantic Ocean, and the distance travelled by its waves before breaking ashore on the Northwest coast, combine to form the ideal conditions to ensure perfect surfing water.

The windswept north and west coasts of Donegal are a renowned surfer’s paradise, with a multitude of reefs, points and sandy beaches, the Ards area is fast becoming recognised for the quality of the surf waves to be found here, whilst in the south of the County famous ‘breaks’ including ‘The Peak’ in Bundoran, offer a challenge to the most experienced surfer, whilst for the novice, gentle beach breaks such as those at Bundoran’s Tullan Strand and Rossnowlagh Strand provide the perfect beginner’s wave, Rossnowlagh is also home to Ireland’s largest surf club.

Bundoran is perhaps the most famous surf destination in Ireland and, as befits this status, it played host to the’Quiksilver’World Master Championship in 2001. Located just a few minutes from the town centre is ‘The Peak’, a classic left-hander that can run to about 100 yards and a beautiful body-boarding wave known as 3D as well as a rough ‘n’tumble sand bar.Tullan

Strand provides an excellent beach for beginners, and Bundoran has plenty of accommodation, surf hire and surf schools if you are following the waves. Donegal Adventure Centre offer hire, surf lessons and skateboarding if you want to stay dry. Further south, Sligo has some of the most renowned surfing beaches in Ireland including Enniscrone, Easkey (famous ‘break’) and Strandhill that offer world-class surfing.

These days, the Northwest often plays host to a large number of the world’s top surfers who visit its shores, not only to enjoy the fantastic surfing, but also to experience the trait and warmth of welcome for which the area is renowned.

The waves that break around the coastline of Donegal and the neighbouring counties of Sligo and Leitrim, are a national treasure just waiting to be discovered and best of all, they’re free!
