I have heard it said; if you want to give God a laugh tell him about your plans. Well I have a grip as I did not tell him about these plans and still…
For the last few weeks I have been transferring all the information from the site onto a new content management system, it was getting hell to keep updating the static html page. I got all the information into a database on a test server and finished that part of it about a week ago.
Wonderful I though, the hard part is done. This is where you laugh. I took Friday and hide away with my computer to put it all live as Fridays are the quietest day of the week on the site, so if something went wrong it would affect the fewest amount of people.
I put day Friday aside to put the new website up and make it live. It went as planned, absolutely great. The site was up and running by 4.30 in the afternoon, brilliant day. I switched off the computer and went out for a coffee with some friends.
Got home about 8.30 and I was checking that the site was fine. Hmm, I thought it seems to be running a bit slow. So being the whiz kid I am, I dropped a bit of code into the root – that’ll speed it up I though.
2 seconds later the server locked me and everyone out…
Ah why did I not just leave it alone? The code I had added made the server think it was being attacked and so it shut down, such fun. It was off-line for the next 24 hrs and now on Monday night I have it all back the way it was on Friday at 4.30pm.
I hope you like the new site, I am looking forward to adding loads more information on all the Caminos.
“Ah Why did I just not leave it alone?”
LOL as an IT worker that is a familiar thought..and the boulder in the stomach sensation that goes with it
And it takes a day to get back to where I was, fun…
A plan only survives until it’s first contact with the enemy!
After that, what alternatives have you got lined up?
Yes, too right. I am happy I went through the pain though as the site is so much better and I am writing more as it is much easier to update.
